| Morgan's Frequently Asked
Questions
|
|
In my experience, people ask three basic
questions - and then two more....that's 5!
- Is that a Poodle?
NO!
But
they are admired descendants. Case closed!
|
- Do PWDs shed ?
NO! We
have hair. Generally, we're great for people who are usually allergic to
dogs because we don't shed. Our Dad is allergic to everything
but he's fine with us. But don't be misled by this. Be sure to check this
thoroughly before getting one of us. It's breaks many hearts if we
arrive and then have to leave.
Grooming is required regularly.
And we love having our nails done. We make our appointments for this
about every 8 weeks. But our owners bath us too! The ole' Sunday morning
bath!
I had worked on a "grooming room"
feature for my site but the PWDCA beat me to it. If you'd like to see
how we are groomed/clipped - please click
here.

|
- Are PWDs good with kids ?
Yes, we
just love to romp with little people. Unfortunately, our little people are all
grown and only visit home occasionally. They usually take us for long jogs when
they are home. It's really fun, but I'm usually exhausted when they
leave.
|
|
- Are PWDs only black ?
NO! We come
in a variety of colors and color combinations. We even have
different hair types and coifs.
For instant, I'm a curly coat in a
retriever cut, black with white feet and chest. Abbey is a wavy - was in a lion
clip, now in a retriever clip. She's mostly black with matching white boots, a crest of white and a Cruella deVille touch on
the top of her head. Actually, her coloring is called "Irish". And so
is her daughter, Bela !
We come in black, brown and white. When
white is the predominant color, we're called "parti-colored".

|
- Where can I get one?
First, you should do homework on us to be sure we're the breed you
want. If you are reading this then you've found a good
place to start. Using this site to find out more about us is
one purpose of the site.

| Two last recommendations
are worth repeating, both straight from the PWDCA.
|
|
"The PWDCA, Inc. strongly recommends
that any dog used for breeding be at least two years old, be examined
for and evaluated free of hip dysplasia (OFA #) and hereditary eye
problems (CERF # and ERG), and individually tested for GM-l status
before being bred. The Club also strongly recommends that GM-1 forms be
provided for each puppy".

|
| The final recommendation
is so true.
Trust me, I know!
|
| "If you want a dog
that requires regular and extensive grooming, demands attention and exercise,
challenges your will, thrives on training and human contact, thinks
independently, voices its opinion, greet friends and family with
unbridled enthusiasm, then the Portuguese Water Dog may be right for
you.
|
|
| If you want a dog
that requires minimal grooming, needs little or no
attention or exercise, naps endlessly in front of the fireplace,
requires
little mental stimulation, presents little or no challenge, blends into
the
woodwork, is content to be left alone, then the Portuguese Water
Dog is
not right for you."
